Oxford Bible Fellowship was established in 1970 by a core group of Miami University professors and their wives. Their desire was to provide a Bible-based church fellowship that would serve Miami University and the surrounding community. Originally meeting in the Oxford Municipal Building, by 1972 they outgrew that space and moved to Presser Hall, on Western College’s campus.
Oxford Bible Fellowship hired its first pastor in 1978, Dale Burke, who was with the church until 1989. In the early 1980s the university asked Oxford Bible Fellowship to find a permanent residence. A home on Maple Street became available and the church bought it in 1981. The church made appropriate additions and it has been used as the church meeting place. Since that time many acquisitions have taken place to enlarge the property and expand the parking lot.
During the mid 1980s, Associate/Intern pastors were hired to share the responsibilities with hopes that they would become church planters. Gary Taylor was the first intern and went on to Evanston, Illinois to found the Evanston Bible Fellowship. Dave Smetana was the next intern and his position became permanent in 1987.
Win Clark came to Oxford Bible Fellowship in the summer of 1990 to serve as the Senior Pastor. Dave Smetana served the church until 2006 and Win Clark until 2007. Jeremy Carr served as Lead Pastor from 2007-2014 and Derek Whalen joined Oxford Bible Fellowship in 2010 as Pastor of Community Life. He served as Interim Lead Pastor from 2014-2015 and is currently the Pastor of Local and Global Impact. Garrett Nates came to Oxford Bible Fellowship in the summer of 2015 to serve as Lead Pastor. In the last five years, we've also added additional staff to help lead Oxford Bible Fellowship's growing congregation.
With a strong emphasis on Jesus Christ, expository teaching, community, and culturally relevant ministry, Oxford Bible Fellowship enjoys a mix of community people, Miami professors, children, Miami students, teenagers, and young marrieds worship at Oxford Bible Fellowship each Sunday. We look forward to the next chapter of experiencing God's work in Oxford.
